Manana Trail to Waimano Falls

My kids have been off of school for 3 days and are making me batty so we took them out on a hike to burn some energy.  My friend Amanda came with us and we decided to head to Waimano Falls today.

We parked on the street on Komo Mai Dr and went through the gate and up the degraded asphalt.  The trail turns to dirt after the water tank on the right hand side.  We were moving slowly because of the kids but enjoying the outdoors and the antics of the kids.  We followed signs for the Manana trail and stayed on the main trail.  There are numerous side trails used by hunters so stay on the main trail.

After a while we came to this sign:

Shortly After that sign “cardiac hill” or “the stairmaster” comes into view.  It’s well-known as a daunting workout on the way back up.  It’s covered in roots and is quite steep on the way down.

We made our way down about half of it before we stopped to take in what was left.  At that point the kids were complaining and we didn’t really like the idea of having to hike back up it.  For some reason my muscles are still sore from all the diving I did last week so I decided to throw in the towel.  At that point we had gone 1.62 miles and were satisfied with that.

Overall the Manana trail is well maintained and pretty popular.  We passed several couples and groups along the way both there and back.  Eventually the Manana trail will lead to the Ko’olau summit and connect with other parts of the KST.  I would say that it’s kid friendly or at least the portion we did today was.  Today we did only a portion of it but it was still a good work out and some fun time with the kids.  Hope you enjoyed my pictures of the Manana trail.
