Kealia Trail

Total Distance: 7 miles round trip:  actual completed milage 4.71

Diffuculty: easy

Hazzards: cliffs, rocks

I did this trail this morning with a buddy.  The views are increadible.  Trailhead easy to find.  Take h2 to wilikina drive and continue straight past waialua high school.  Continue on to Dillingham airfield and look for a driveway on the left just after the gree fence ends.  This will take you on to airport property.  You will see the brown sign on the right.

The trail starts as a gentle grade with many many switchbacks.  We took frequent breaks to get our breath and my muscles were screaming at me having hike the last 3 days in a row.  We reached a covered picnic table and sat down for a break.  Then we pushed on straight uphill on a gravel/deteriorating paved road.  We went up several hills, took in the views and at the bottom of one hill we made a deal.  If at the crest ofthe current hill was another hill we were done.  And of course there was another hill so we didn’t make the summit.  While I’m disapointed we didn’t make the summit this trail is a demanding cardio work out so I feel good about that.  We also go to enjoy a lot of really awesome views without making it all the way up.  We say parachuters coming down and gliders landing and sweeping views of the north shore.

The big difference on this hike was that we didn’t have a view of Waikiki or Honolulu or some tightly packed neighborhood.  It was beautiful.  And it wasn’t muddy which was a definate plus.

Overall this was a very enjoyable trail and I hope to do it again another day and make the summit so I can see the views down to waianae on the other side of the mountain.
